Dropbox Announces Cuts Amid Leadership Changes

Dropbox has announced plans to cut approximately 9% of its global workforce as the cloud storage company reshapes spending around its principal products and growth opportunities. The restructuring, disclosed on Wednesday, 28 October, comes alongside the planned departure of chief technology officer Ali Dasdan, adding to a period of senior leadership change as the business adjusts its longer-term investment priorities and overall operating structure.
According to a regulatory filing, Dropbox expects the workforce reduction to cost between $27 million and $33 million, principally through severance and associated expenses. Most of those charges are expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, with the remainder falling in 2027. The company employed 2,113 full-time staff at the end of last year.
Dasdan is scheduled to step down on 18 November. His departure follows a separate change at the top of the business, when co-founder Drew Houston relinquished the chief executive role in May and Ashraf Alkarmi was promoted to lead the company. The combination places responsibility for a difficult restructuring with a recently appointed executive team.
Dropbox said it expects third-quarter revenue and adjusted operating margin to meet or exceed its previous guidance. That outlook means the cuts are being presented as a reallocation of resources, rather than simply a response to disappointing quarterly results. For management, the challenge is to preserve product development and customer service while removing costs. Investors will also assess how the incoming leadership establishes continuity, particularly as the company redirects investment towards products intended to support longer-term growth.
