Global Telecom Leaders Renew GSMA Mandates

Bharti Airtel executive vice-chairman Gopal Vittal has been re-elected chairman of the GSMA, extending his leadership of the international telecommunications industry association until December 2028. The appointment, announced on 2 November, comes as mobile operators confront growing demands for network investment, digital security and the development of next-generation communications services.
Vittal will lead the organisation's board for the 2027–2028 term, having first become chairman in 2025. Vodafone Group chief executive Margherita Della Valle has been appointed co-deputy chair alongside MTN Group chief executive Ralph Mupita, who retains the position. Their appointments bring together senior executives from companies operating across Europe, Africa and Asia, reflecting the international reach of the mobile telecommunications industry.
The GSMA represents mobile network operators and businesses across the wider digital communications ecosystem. Its activities include industry coordination, advocacy and the organisation of major events such as Mobile World Congress. Vittal has identified cybersecurity, online fraud and the industry's ability to finance infrastructure as important priorities. He also expects artificial intelligence and advanced networks to create new opportunities for telecommunications companies.
The leadership appointments arrive at a time when operators are investing heavily in network capacity while facing pressure to improve financial returns. Security threats and increasingly sophisticated scams have also strengthened the case for cooperation between competing providers. For the GSMA, maintaining industry alignment across different regulatory environments will remain essential as mobile networks become more closely connected to economic activity, public services and emerging technologies.
