HP is turning to a leader from outside the technology hardware industry as it confronts a difficult computer market. The American manufacturer has appointed former GSK chief executive Emma Walmsley to take charge on 4 January 2027.

Walmsley led GSK through a significant restructuring, including the separation of consumer-health group Haleon. She will replace interim chief Bruce Broussard, who is set to become HP’s board chair.

The appointment comes amid rising memory-chip costs and weaker PC shipments, even as manufacturers promote premium and AI-enabled machines. Walmsley brings experience managing a large international business, although she has not previously run a computer hardware company.

For HP’s board, the decision suggests that organisational transformation and capital allocation may be as important as product expertise. Investors will judge whether experience gained in pharmaceuticals can help the company defend margins and identify growth in a technology market undergoing significant structural change.
