Pixar Leadership Transition Separates Creative Responsibilities

Pixar is preparing a change at the top while retaining a clear distinction between artistic leadership and business operations. Jonathan Garson will become president on 4 January 2027 as Jim Morris steps back from day-to-day responsibilities.
Garson, a longstanding executive at the Disney-owned animation studio, will oversee production and operations. Chief creative officer Pete Docter will continue to guide the studio’s films, while Morris moves towards retirement after years in senior leadership.
The succession comes at a time when major animation studios must manage expensive production pipelines, changing audience habits and the uncertain economics of cinema releases and streaming distribution. Maintaining creative consistency while controlling costs is an enduring challenge.
Pixar’s structure offers a governance model in which operational authority and creative direction are deliberately distinct. The success of the transition will depend on whether that arrangement protects the quality of the studio’s work while allowing the business to adapt to a changing entertainment industry.
